IU Football Head Coach Terry Heoppner died today after complications with a brain tumor that he had been battling for over 18 months.

Coach Hep came into IU and took a struggling program that nobody cared about and took it by its ear and was taking it down the path of respectability.  “Defend The Rock” was his battle cry, but after two brain operations,  cancer finally overtook him.

Hep never seemingly let it get the best of him, though.  When all of his hair fell out after his first bout of chemotherapy, Coach was never seen without his IU cap, telling people that his hair was “under construction.”

So now the responsibility of defending the rock falls on former Ball State head coach Bill Lynch.  Let’s hope that he fares better down in Bloomington than he did in Muncie.

He’s definitely got a big role to fill.
