People Watching

November 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Have you ever just taken a step back from the world and watched things move around you? Have you ever made yourself a spectator of the position that you are in, instead of a spectator to whatever it is that is going on that put you in that position?

We had a meeting today at one of my jobs. Everyone that was at work at that time came down to a hall, and we all met. In walks the Vice President of the company, in all the way from the next state where the HQs are. Immediately, and I mean immediately, the room fell silent. I really don’t think I’ve ever heard a room, which was full of laughter and murmuring just moments before, fall so silent, so quickly.

So the VP walks up to podium and begins to give the schpiel. I’m not really important enough to care really what is going on. I’m smart enough to pick out the snipets that can relate to me and figure it out, but most of it is irrelevant to me. So I withdraw myself from the speech. But instead of just zoning out like I sometimes do, I start to watch people’s reactions.

People watching is something that I like to do from time to time. Especially in photographs. I remember when I was a kid, I had a picture of Reggie Miller sinking a game winning shot against the Knicks hanging on my wall. When I looked at the picture, I never really saw Reggie in the photo. I used to have a great time looking at all the expressions on people’s faces at that very moment. There were people with hopeful expressions, people with frightened expressions, people who weren’t even paying attention.

I saw the same in the room today.

But I also saw a more primitive connection. He was the alpha male of our unit. His mere presence dominated the room. When he made a joke, people laughed. No matter how lame the joke. When he said something important, people leaned in.

Anyway, I just found that interesting. And the point of the post isn’t really to talk about how Sally from Accounting reacted to the news of someone being fired, but to get you, the reader to take a step back from things. Sometime, preferably when you’re not going to miss something important, take a step back and look beyond the subject to the supporting cast. Like when you listen to music for not just the lyrics, but the individual instruments. You will find a lot of interesting things.

So I’m finally trading in my 1995 Chevy Lumina that I’ve had for five years in. I’ll be cruising around town in a 2003 Dodge Durango. Pretty sweet.

Friendship is a Two Way Street

July 15, 2007 · 1 Comment

So last night April and I attended the wedding of my best-friend growing up.  I haven’t talked to him in awhile.  Not due to lack of trying on his part, however.  I just have been a sucky friend, if I even qualify for the word “friend” in this situation.

Growing up, this guy and I were like peas ‘n’ carrots.  You couldn’t go too long seeing one of us without seeing the other (unless he was hunting, which I was not all about).  I’ve known this guy since I was in third grade.  That’s 14 years.

But now, I feel like I don’t know anything about him, and that makes me disappointed in myself.  I was the best-man in his first wedding, and I slipped, in just a few years, from best man to just another face in the crowd.

You know, for someone who complains about people not getting him, it sure is shitty to ignore one of the friends he does have.

And that makes me sick.

So, now I have to figure out how to climb back up the ladder.  I don’t want to be an acquaintance, I want to climb back to the top, which won’t be easy, because the guy there now is pretty much cemented in now.

That is, if he doesn’t do what would be 100% acceptable and ignore me like I did him.

Y HELO THAR!

July 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

So it’s been over a week since I blessed this corner of the Super Highway with my presence, but I’m here now, and that’s all that matters.

The past week has been crazy.  I worked 55 hours, had July 4th in there somewhere, went to a wedding, started my third job solo, and painted a nursery.  Holy cow, I know.

The Top 5 Reasons Geeks Make Good Fathers

June 22, 2007 · Leave a Comment

April sent this to me today. It was very sweet and cool.

Top Five Reasons Geeks Make Good Fathers

1. LEGOS. The Geek is really more of a Man-Child than an adult. In their minds, they are still 10. They freakin’ still love to play with their Legos, and have never grown up.

2. VIDEO GAMES. Due to the whole Man-Child thing as stated in #1, the Geek loves video games. And he’s good at them too. Geeks are the hit of all the kids’ friends because not only can he talk video games, he plays them too. If the kids get “stuck” while playing their Gameboys and bring it to me for assistance, all I can do is feebly hold it and say ” Mommy doesn’t know how to play this.” Daddy, however, can beat the game.

3. MATH. A huge plus here. No matter how old they get, geeks can still help with the math homework. My ability to be of assistance is going to last another few years before *I* end up throwing the math homework across the room in disgust.

4. SMART KIDS. Smart Geeks make smart children. Although for the most part, it’s great to have really intelligent children, when your just turned two year old is using the word PREPOSTEROUS correctly, it makes for some difficult times as they get older. I literally spend a large part of my time scheming to stay one step ahead of my oldest child.

5. UP ON TECHNOLOGY. The beautiful thing about having a Geek for a parent is that you aren’t wondering what your children are doing online. You *KNOW* what they are doing online and you can limit it if necessary.

My Epitaph

June 11, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I want this to be the epitaph on my tombstone when I die. Someone make sure it gets done:

“Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not. Attachment leads to jealousy. The shadow of greed that is.”
-Yoda, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

I think this sums up my feelings on death and absolute abhorrence toward funerals.

What would your epitaph read?
